In these days, people are growing more and more interested in “well-being.” Well-being indicates several things, but the major part of it is food. The start point of people caring about their well-being—food—is derived from the abundance of the food supply. When my grandmother was still alive, people had not been concerned about what they eat, but eat only for surviving. How could they care what they eat? We were short of any kinds of food.
As time goes on, things have been changed. New technologies are developed: new machines, new spices, new pesticides, Genetically Modified Organisms and so on. With these trends, the amount of food supply has been skyrocketing. Some people may not know how big the difference of the amount of food supply is. Here is the thing. One research (2004) reports that U.S. population cannot consume a half of all foods they produce. In other words, we are capable of producing foods over the capability of consuming foods. We can choose what we want to eat. We eat for surviving as well as enjoying the good taste or being healthier.
However, the abundance of the food supply in food market accompany with new kind of problem: thousands of the same kind of food labeled different brand names on are waiting for us to buy them. Buyers are hard to find foods that they need or want, whereas sellers’ difficulties come from that they should stand out among those thousands of competitors.
I’m going to introduce you this fiery competitive food market with ten interesting themes.
Look at these! Which one would you choose to drink?
- Dieters’ dream
60% of U.S. adults “say they restrict at least one nutritional component from their diet” (FoodManufacturing, 2014). This “one nutritional component” could be sodium, sweetener, gluten and so on. All these efforts are for their ideal diet for thin and healthier body.
If you have an experience of looking for low fat, low Calories, low sodium, low sweetener here and there in the market as 60% of U.S adults above do, you would agree with me that this is the very dream that dieters have always dreamt of.
Isn’t it wonderful?
- Guilty pleasure
“A guilty pleasure is something, such as a movie, a television program or a piece of music, that one enjoys despite feeling that it is not generally held in high regard” (Wikipedia). Simply saying, you would feel pleasure when you do something you usually restrain from doing. More simply saying, you would feel pleasure when you choose to eat a buttery chocolate during your diet
Even if You ruin my diet—“not in high regard—
I cannot give you up!—“one enjoy” that I cannot give up—
- Too good to be true
Exaggeration is one of marketing strategies. However, it is your choice whether you believe the text in ads. As a guide, “76% of people think advertising is exaggerated [and] only 3% of those [think] the claims made in ads very accurate” (Vaughan, 2013). Don’t you think that less is always more?
Isn’t is too good to be true?
- Disastrous food packaging
Food packaging is very important for the food industry. It could sometimes be a marketing strategy or a trademark or a method of keeping food fresh. One study (2013) shows “packaging is the major factor that influence buying [behavior] which leads to sales volume.” Based on this fact, we could assume that the food industry pays extra attention to food packaging. However, the result is not always good.
What am I missing here?
In the first picture, cans do not have an opener part as a can in the second picture. Well, we invented tools to open cans like those in the first picture. At this point, we cannot help asking the question like this: why don’t they use the can that has an opener part? And why do they make us buy a tool for opening cans unnecessarily?
- Ironic food
All desserts contain the considerable amount of sugar. Of course, it is not good for health; however, it is inevitable to use sugar for its taste. To stand out among competitors, sellers should keep some level of their product’s taste. A bad news for seller here is that sellers should follow the current food trend, well-being, at the same time. Food sellers in these days should be Supermen that can eat their cake and have it, too.
A picture above presents desserts that follow the food trend rather than the pursuit of the better taste. However, this is the case that sellers failed to be Supermen. How ironic! They gave up taste because they want customers to buy their product; but they lose their customers, because of being less tasty.
- Hangover cure
There are many types of hangover cures in the world. In South Korea, people eat a spicy soup after they drink alcohol drinks.
Spicy as hell
I heard that they eat tomatoes for hangover cure in Europe. But in anywhere in the world, no one might haven’t experienced the hangover cure that Haley drinks (Modern Family Season 4).
- Going organic, going broke
Well-being trend brings organic trend as well. People want the food that “Organic” label attach to it. However, organic food requires a great deal of care. It means it’s expensive. There is an evidence that Organic foods cost 18~20% more than any other foods (Pastor, R. K., & Fletcher, E, 2013).
It’s not organic
Here it is with the higher price
The difference between non-organic and organic foods presented here is one dollar, but they say “Drop by drop fills the tub.” That one-dollar will be snowballing and at last, it could be a reason you broke.
- Eating on a budget
Eating on a budget is very important for students like me. There are many strategies for eating on a budget; the main strategy is to know that everything depends on your continuous effort to find the cheaper one. Save now! Or you will regret.
What makes you that much expensive?
Not cheap enough to buy!
It is what I am looking for!
- Simple versus Complex
Sometimes I don’t know what to do when I face with all those ingredients. Even when I try to make a garden salad, I should buy some of the vegetables, wash it, sometimes peel it, chop it and so on. There are so many things to do. It is more complex than you thought.
What am I going to do? What should I do?
However, there is the food that could save you!
Simple as you see!
Already be washed, peeled, and chopped! The only thing that I need to do is to select a delicious dressing. However, the nutrition including Vitamin C could be destroyed, because it is easily destroyed during the preparation process (e.g. washing, chopping, etc.). This is the moment that you choose. Simple versus complex! There is no certain answer.
- Targeted at tots
All themes I talked are about well-being, a budget on foods, and even a hangover cure that reflect adult’s perspective. The last theme is about kids. Kids don’t care about the nutrition, the cooking, and the budget. How do food industries target kids? The answer is this.
Hey, kids! Why don’t you try us?
If their favorite superheroes attract them on the label of the food product, they do not hesitate to try it.
I introduced you ten interesting themes that reflect the present-day’s food market. I hope that you guys enjoy it and could make a wise choice for foods what you want to eat based on this posting.
